the tracey fragments

"He stuck his cock in me and said I love you, in that exact order. Now I'm not afraid to die. 'Cause like birds and bees and bugs, they all die after they fuck."

"Exhibit A - my father. He had sex with my mum to make me but, you know, I think he like, frickin fell on her or something because he says that we're both accidents."

"
When a horse falls, foam comes out of its mouth. When it falls, the legs of the horse thrash and the horse is no good ... so somebody shoots it. The horse turns into glue. A machine puts the glue into bottles and children squeeze the bottles to get the glue out and stick bits of paper onto cards. Glue gets on the children's hands and the children eat the glue. And the children become the horse."

"I don't like the country. Creeps me out. In the country, dead bodies live in swamps, and ditches, and shallow graves. A man dumps the body of a girl in a ditch. The body rotts; Melts into slime. Flowers pop up where the body lies, seeds fly out of the flowers, and a bee sucks the flowers and makes honey. And then the family of the girl buys the honey from the store. And the family eats the girl."

respect the yannis

tell us about the tour?
we never had lights or like a visual thing before though, so that'll be different. and just playing to more people. we're the kind of band that really feed off that reciprocal energy from a crowd. we really need it, so the more people the merrier, in a way.

a new direction for the next album?
we feel like we've done the dance guitar thing. we want to jump to the furthest extreme. at the moment, what we can think of is surf rock. there's probably more extreme stuff to do, but i think surf rock is the most appealing.

is commercial success important?
we want people to like our band. we want people to listen to our records. i want people to like our records. i think we all do in the band, otherwise we wouldn't be doing it. i think the bands that say that they don't are essentially liars. because you would've never gotten a record deal, you'd just make music for yourself. but i think the key to it is to not allow that to become your motivation.

has fame changed you?
i don't think i really am famous. we don't feel famous at all. i still go home, i still kind of live with my mum and she makes me do laundry. so i don't really feel famous. i feel awkward when people ask me that.

token asian

kd: what music do we have on 'hold'?
a: the three tenors
kd: does that really relate to our candidates?
a: no, but it's either that or christmas music
kd: what about the radio?
kf: we'd have to pay for the radio
a: no we don't, we'll just buy a gadget that plays the radio and plug it in
kd: oh, it's a legal thing
a: oh, a legal thing. i'm asian. legal does not exist in my vocabulary.

...

a: took me so long to get my contacts in and i had to tug on my eye ... which can cause wrinkles
d: oh, you don't have to tug that much
a: i have asian eyes
d: valid point

i touched foals

i cannot retain my excitement any longer. okay, that's a lie. i've been on a i-totally-had-skin-to-skin-contact-with-yannis-philippakis high for the past two hours. let's start from the beginning ...

it's been a while since i've been to the hi-fi bar. i tend to forget how great a venue it is. it's just so intimate. not too big, not too small - just perfect for a foals gig. couldn't have picked a better venue. honestly, you could stand anywhere and you'd still have a great view. what we thought was a less than average standing area, ended up being quite possibly the best spot ever. not only was it a few meters away from foals, but it was also surprisingly roomy. and of course, let's not forget - i got to touch yannis, and by touch i mean his sweaty body ran into me. yes, we collided. swoons. all caught on camera, albeit dark and poor in quality. sigh. chime in the cliché - i'll always have the memory. punchline drum roll.

needless to say, this show was eargasmic. i didn't really know what to expect from foals live. their performances have definitely improved since their early days. they performed songs from both old and new albums. as much as i love 'total life forever', i have a soft spot for 'antidotes'. it's the album that made foals. it is foals. they toned down on the math rock in 'total life forever' and produced a softer album, representing a more mature foals. i've been there from the very beginning. i've seen their progress from their EP to their second album. they've come a long way. an amazing band consistently producing brilliant music. i can't fault them.

update: duminda went to the foals warehouse after-party. promptly texted me the following: -
"all i can say is i met, chatted with and took a photo with yannis" ... queue pang of jealousy

"i spoke about the gig and how much we loved it and how amazing it was and he said he really appreciated it and tonight was better than last night"
... what did i tell you?

foalsfoalsfoals

"i think we can safely say australia is the best place to tour in the world.
why didn't we do this earlier?" - foalsfoalsfoals via twitter
you think melbourne's crowd on monday was good. wait till you experience tuesday.
monday: people who couldn't beat the tuesday rush for tickets, or people who hesitated buying tickets because they just weren't too sure.
tuesday: the awesome ones who found you before you were famous.
... need i say more?

deciphering books

i love books. i love reading them. i love the sound when i turn the page. i love the feeling of being in someone else's shoes and the fantasy world of fiction. i love the knowledge gained from non-fiction. i love the look and feel of hardcover books. i love thumb flicking through a paperback from cover to cover, followed by the slight gust infused with the paper scent. oh, the smell of books. swoons. it just makes me all giddy inside.

my books-to-read pile is ever-growing. granted, a majority of the books are simple reads - i just haven't had the chance to skim through them yet. i have a tendency to read three-quarters of a book, then move on to the next ... leaving it there to collect dust. while i'm on the topic, i just want to say - i heart steven levitt's freakonomics books. i always feel intellectually stimulated after reading a chapter from one of his books.

i also have three more books on the way - 1) 101 things i learned in business school by michael w. preis; 2) the snow yak show by mark ryden; 3) the tipping point by malcom gladwell. depending on how gladwell's books read, i may also be inclined to read his books - outliers and blink. but let's not get ahead of ourselves. come november, if everything goes to plan, i'll also have marketing course work to read through. joy. on a lighter note, course work comes hand in hand with text books, and text books have the best paper scent. oh, glossy text book pages, how i eagerly await your arrival upon my doorstep.

it's a sunny winter day today, i might go for a ride. pop by a local cafe for some brunch, whilst sipping tea with a book on my lap. perhaps listen to the soothing voice of mumford & sons. care to join me?

michi girl & kat macleod

i recently skimmed through like i give a frock by michi girl. although the content is amusingly satire, i wouldn't exactly say it's well written. some of the points raised are valid, but i also found myself cringing at some of her views. i'm not the only reader with this point of view either. michi subtly placed a letter in her book from a fellow reader stating that: -
"although it's a little light on actual fashion advice, i'm still finding it quite useful. for example, the other day i was out having coffee in the sun and realised i'd left my sunglasses at home. but then i realised i had a copy of your book in my bag. it was the perfect size to block the sun from my eyes while i read my favourite magazine" - like i give a frock
i'm not sure how i would take to someone telling me that my book (if i had one) was only ever good for blocking the sunlight so i could read another book or magazine. there's also an email from her mother, implying that michi shouldn't judge people with facial hair. the fact that michi allowed these to be published in her book, reveals that she's very much aware of what people think of her writing and judgmental demeanor - and quite frankly, she doesn't give a shit. not only that, she's making bucket loads of money out of it. all power to her.

i was mislead into buying this book, thinking it would be an enjoyable leisurely read about fashion, as the blurb suggests. my own fault of course, judging a book by it's cover. that said, had i not done so, i wouldn't have come across the artwork of melbourne's very own, kat macleod. i may not love this book for its written content, but the illustrations are beautiful. her artistic combination of sketches, vibrant watercolours and fabrics, screams brilliance. and with that, i'll leave you with a clip of kat macleod's art process. appreciate and enjoy.

mug cake

Ingredients
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 3 tbsp butter flavour infused rice bran oil, or butter
  • ¼ tsp vanilla essence or peppermint
  • 1 tbsp choc chips
  • 1 large mug

Directions

  1. Add dry ingredients to the mug, and mix well.
  2. Crack an egg and add it to your mug. Be sure to mix it well to avoid any pockets of flour in the corners. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the vanilla essence.
  3. Pop your mug into the microwave & zap for 3 minutes on maximum power (1000watt). Wait until the cake stops rising, and sets in the mug.
  4. If necessary, run a knife around the sides of the mug, and tip the still warm cake out of the mug and onto a saucer.

matryoshkas

"This set of 6 dry-measure cups nests neatly just like traditional Russian matryoshkas. They accurately measure 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and 1 full cup, and they’re built from heavy-duty, food-safe, long-life engineering plastics. M-Cups are useful, easy to store, and quite charming...so why not doll up YOUR kitchen with a little Russian folklore?" - fred & friends

the track record

the track record - a record of the number of times you've been a dumper or a dumpee. some people take pride in such trivial matters. question - is being a renowned dumper a negative or positive thing? we can look at this from a positive or a negative perspective. i'm all about negatives, and i will blog as such. so here goes ...

let's be biased and take the genuine good guys/girls out of the equation i.e. the ones who are just trying to find the right person but constantly fail because they're a bad judge of character. now we're left with the class-a jerks i.e. the ones that like to pull at other's heart strings with their good looks and charm. they live by the shameful but effective love them and leave them tactic. from my perspective, people who do keep a track record are obnoxious and thus, fit in the latter category. if this is the case, then would being the dumper be all it's cracked up to be? do people take pride in being, for lack of a better word, a player?

the player will refuse to be anything other than the upper-hand. so much so, that should their record be threatened, in an attempt to keep their track record, they will retreat to the dreaded breakup call. there's no time to think, my reputation is on the line. needless to say, in the off chance that the player does get dumped, he/she will either deny it or deem the break up mutual.

which brings me to my next discussion point - when are you classified as the dumper? consider the following situation:
boy who previously cheated on girl wants to get drunk and crash at a chicks house with a bunch of other chicks. insecure girlfriend does not appreciate this and thinks over the relationship overnight. girlfriend calls boy the following day to tell him she doesn't feel like there is enough effort and she is done with his bullshit (note: girl initially offered to meet up to discuss the situation, but boy was stubborn and preferred to hear it over the phone as there was 'no point' in meeting up). end.
clearly, this was not a mutual breakup. yet, to this day, boy believes it is. how can something so obvious be misinterpreted, you ask? well, in an attempt to keep his track record he'll tell the world that he has never been dumped. repetition and selective memory have come in to play. such a method is very effective and generally produces the intended result. chances are he'll end up convincing himself. insert-ego-boost-here. so there you go kids, a classic example of a person who takes so much pride in his so-called track record, that he is blinded by the fact that - no, it wasn't a mutual break up, you were dumped. insert-gasp-here.

let me reiterate, i don't care for the track record. the issue here is a case of acknowledgment. if these white lies keep you from the truth, if you've managed to convince even yourself, then how are you going to ever learn from your mistakes? you'll never face the issues that led to the break up in the first place. it's a little disappointing. not to mention, i can't imagine a track record would be viewed as a feat or an attractive demeanor. if anything, it makes you seem all the more intimidating. but hey, perhaps that's the impression you're going for.

the notebook

at the risk of sounding corny. i love this scene.

Noah: Well that's what we do, we fight ... You tell me when I am being an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you are a pain in the ass. Which you are, 99% of the time. I'm not afraid to hurt your feelings. You have like a 2 second rebound rate, then you're back doing the next pain-in-the-ass thing.
Allie: So what?
Noah: So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What's it look like? If it's with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out.
